  • Penrose Elementary School has embarked on a three year journey to immerse the school in STEM and Deeper Learning. The school has received grants to bring Americorps Members to the school to work in the classroom assisting the classroom teacher with hands-on science programs and has started an after-school Robotics program with the University of Pennsylvania. In addition the school was one of three schools in Philadelphia to receive a Redesign Initiative Award from the SDP to implement the STEM and Deeper Learning program in the school. The school has partnered with ASSET East a nationally known organization and provider of STEM education. ASSET will be working with our teachers over the Redesign period teaching them about inquiry based and project based learning and using STEM in the classroom. Penrose School has also been included in the US 2020 Pilot for the spring of 2016.

    During the Redesign Year the school will be including special needs students in all science programs and will be working on including age appropriate special needs students with their regular education grade group partners. Our special needs students will be included in our science fair, and in field trips to science programs outside of school.
