  • Moving Atoms
Get students involved in understanding the power of atoms.

Atoms make up everything in the universe: the air we breathe, the clothes we ™re wearing, the food we eat, everything! They are the tiniest building blocks in the world so tiny that a trillion of them could fit on the head of a pin. Some science labs, including some at IBM Research, have huge microscopes that are so powerful they can see individual atoms. IBM scientists are able to use chemical forces to physically move single atoms from one place to another. We ™ve been able to create pictures, spell words and even make movies using scanning tunneling microscopy. Now, you can simulate this with a fun activity using magnets.
    Impact!
    Audience: ages 5 to 15.
A cool way to demonstrate fundamental science that is used in today’s technology, like storing lots of music or other media on a tiny device.
Gets students excited about science and technology as a career path.
